The Silver
Spring chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. is part of a
national organization
that serves as an advocate for stay-at-home mothers of color and encourages the
spirit of community activism.
Mocha
Moms does not discriminate
and all are welcome to join who support our mission, regardless of sex, race,
religion, socioeconomic or employment status.
Our chapter
was chartered in April 2001, and has grown from six members and nine children to
over twenty members with children ranging from newborn to 4 years old. Our older kids (Pre-K and up)
usually join us on fieldtrips when school is out. The Silver Spring
chapter is comprised of Moms who live in Burtonsville, Silver Spring, Columbia
and Laurel.
Who
Are We?
We like to
think of our chapter as being unique. We are a group of compassionate, fun
loving women who have decided to leave our professional lives and enter into the
world of full time motherhood to better nurture our children. Many of our
members work part-time, or are entrepreneurs and/or consultants to maintain a
balance between work and home. Our primary mission is to empower stay-at-home
moms to live their best lives as moms, wives, friends and the incredible women
they are meant to be. Moreover, we seek:
-
To encourage and support
the unique talents of the individual members.
-
To provide a safe and
controlled atmosphere for children to interact, play and learn.
-
To provide a format that
is conducive to positive dialogue about concerns, problems and everyday
experiences.
-
To explore ways to raise
happy, healthy and kind children.
-
To provide an outlet for
mom to get away from her responsibilities and to "just have fun" at least once
a month.
-
To help the community
through service while teaching the Mocha Kids the importance of giving back.
-
To realize that it does
indeed take a village and each member is to play a significant role.
Mocha Moms
is about US. Our Mothers' Support meetings are held every Wednesday from 10 am – noon. The goal of our
meetings (often referred to as "playgroups") is to give us the
opportunity to connect on a weekly basis, exchange information, bounce ideas off
each other and support each other in our choices. Most of our activities
are geared toward moms and not children. Of course, children are certainly
welcome, but are not essential for you to meet, connect and have fun.
During our
summer hiatus, we generally "catch-up" at the playground or we have
fieldtrips for the kids such as having lunch at the zoo or visiting a local
aquarium. Our Moms' Only activities include book club discussions, dinner
and movies, or taking an art exhibit tour to name a few.
